【场景】Central Perk, everyone but Phoebe is there.
中心花园，除了Phoebe之外，大家都在。
A but B + 动词（do,be）：表示除了B之外，A的行为或状态，动词形式是就近原则。
比如：The whole class but Jimmy was late.除了Jimmy，其他人都迟到了。
Ross: Hey. Oh, oh, how‘d it go?
Phoebe: Um, not so good. He walked me to the subway and said ‘We should do this again!‘

How did it go：事情进展的怎样了？
类似的表达方法有How things going?
如果一段时间没见过某人，在打招呼的时候也可以这么说，或者说:
How is your life?
What are you up to?
How is you doing？
回答，如果是一般或好的方面，可以有以下这些说法：
Not bad/Just so-so/Good/Great/Wonderful! (程度逐渐递增)
Still alive and kicking.（我觉得这个说法很好，很生动）
如果是坏的方面，可以说
Never been so bad.
I wish it would be better.
或者像Phoebe说的，not so good.
为什么Phoebe这么说呢？因为那个男生把她送到地铁之后说“We should do this again”
这是约会语言（dating language），言下之意，是我们不会赤诚相见了(You will never see me naked)。如果不解释，可能我们都认为We should do this again是好兆头吧？
比如“It‘s not you‘”就是“It is you”
“You‘re such a nice guy”意思是 “I‘m gonna be dating leather-wearing alcoholics and complaining about them to you”(翻译：我要和皮革族的酒徒约会然后跟你抱怨)
“I think we should see other people”意思是“Ha, ha, I already am”（翻译：“我们该试试别人”代表“哈哈，我已经在和别人约会了”）
Rachel: And everybody knows this?
Joey: Yeah. Cushions the blow. 善意的谎言
cushion：n.垫子，软垫，衬垫；缓冲减轻或缓和不利后果的东西
v.保护保护…免受撞击或其它有害后果：减缓…的后果；
这里的cushion应该是做动词用。Cushions the blow，字面解释是“减缓打击的后果”。这里则表示“减少不愉快事物的影响，以使对方不太难堪”。
Ross: What? Wh- hello? The Millners' farm in Connecticut? The Millners, they had this unbelievable farm, they had horses, and, and rabbits that he could chase and it was- it w- .....Oh my God, Chi Chi!
chase：追逐
【场景】Chandler帮助Joey排练（rehearse）一段剧幕
Chandler: "So how does it feel knowing you‘re about to die?"
Joey: "Warden, in five minutes my pain will be over. But you‘ll have to live with the knowledge that you sent an honest man to die."
Chandler: Hey, that was really good!
Joey: Thanks! Let‘s keep going.
Chandler: Okay. "So. Whaddya want from me, Damone, huh?"
【解析】
live with the knowledge that：（直译）活着并知道，也就是知道的意思。【口】承认，忍受（不愉快的事）
keep going ：继续（做某事）吧
whaddya：就是what do you的缩写。上次讲到，美语算是比较懒的语言，在口语中总有很多吞音和连音的现象。写出来也按照其发音习惯。这个例子就体现出来了。再比如，getcha，就是get you
Chandler: "Smoke away."
【解析】away本身是离开，远离的意思，在这里放在smoke后表示尽管抽吧
【scene】Joey takes out a pack of cigarettes and a lighter. He fumbles and drops the lighter. Then he lights a cigarett, takes a drag, and coughs.
fumble：笨拙地做
drop：下降，丢下，扔下。这里应该是指丢掉了打火机。
take a drag：俚语，深深地吸一口烟。
Chandler: Relax your hand!
(Joey lets his wrist go limp.) 软弱的，无力的
Chandler: Alright, now try taking a puff. 抽口烟、吹（烟），将口中的烟吹出
(Joey tries and visibly winces.) vi. 畏缩, 退缩, 退避
Chandler: It's fine, it's fine. Look, do you wanna get this part, or not? Here. 角色
(Joey reluctantly gives him the cigarette.)

Monica: No, no, no. They say it's the same as the distance from the tip of a guy's thumb to the tip of his index finger.
(The guys stretch out their fingers.)伸出，伸展开
tip：n. 顶, 尖端, 梢, 末端, 倾斜, 垃圾场, 小费, 轻击, 指点, 秘密消息
index finger：食指
stretch out：伸手，开始大踏步走
Rachel: (leaving to serve others) Good for me! 我真行
(The gang swaps all the drinks for what they ordered as Phoebe enters. She sits down without saying hi.)
swap：交换，交易 swap sth.for …以某物作交换…
Phoebe: It's nothing, it's just- Okay. I'm going through my mail, and I open up their monthly, you know, STATEMENT- 浏览我的信件
Ross: Easy. 别激动
Phoebe: - and there's five hundred extra dollars in my account. 多了五百块
Chandler: Oh, Satan's minions at work again... chandler的幽默来了：撤旦的奴才又开始活跃了

Phoebe: Yes, 'cause now I have to go down there, and deal with them.
Joey: What are you talking about? Keep it!
Phoebe: It's not mine, I didn't earn it, if I kept it, it would be like stealing.
Rachel: Yeah, but if you spent it, it would be like shopping!
Phoebe: Okay. Okay, let's say I bought a really great pair of shoes. Do you know what I'd hear, with every step I took? 'Not-mine. Not-mine. Not-mine.' And even if I was happy, okay, and, and skipping- 'Not-not-mine, not-not-mine, not-not-mine, not-not-mine'... 你们知道我每踏出一步都会听到什么吗?
skip：本意是跳跃，跳过，遗漏，在这里意思是雀跃
Phoebe: Okay. I‘d- just- I‘d never be able to enjoy it. It would be like this giant karmic debt
这笔横财并不使Phoebe高兴，因为她始终觉得这笔钱不是自己的，花起来不坦然，就像是业的报应(Karmic debt)。Karmic是karma的形容词形式。Karma是指“轮回背后的真理和驱动力”，即“业”。“业”是主宰宇宙的因果律。业的字面意思是「行动」，业既是潜藏于行动的力量，也是吾人行动所带来的结果。（这里花比较长的篇幅解释karmic，为的是多了解一些知识 :)）
Monica: We're with you. We got it. 我们站在你这边
(Chandler leans over the back of the couch out of sight.)
【场景】Chandler吸烟
All: Ohhh! Put it out!
put out：熄灭；扑灭；生产；出版；发布；伸出
例：Please put out the light before you go to bed.（熄灭）
put oneself out：费神；花工夫
例：She likes to keep herself to herself and never puts herself out to help others.
(Chandler tries to shrug nonchalantly but eventually he has to exhale a mouthful of smoke.)呼出满嘴的烟
shrug：耸肩
nonchalantly：冷淡地，漠不关心地
exhale：呼气，发出，散发
【场景】Monica在上班时与同事Paula谈起是否带新的男朋友Alan给大家看
Monica: I mean, why should I let them meet him? I mean, I bring a guy home, and within five minutes they‘re all over him. I mean, they‘re like- coyotes, picking off the weak members of the herd.
翻译：我的意思是，为什么让他们看到他？每次我带回一个小伙子，五分钟后他们便开始针对他(be all over sb.)，他们就像土狼(coyote)，去除（pick off）在土狼群中的弱者。
这里表示的是Ross他们总是像土狼一样，找到弱处就痛下其手。
Paula: Listen. As someone who‘s seen more than her fair share of bad beef, I‘ll tell you: that is not such a terrible thing. I mean, they‘re your friends, they‘re just looking out after you.
【解析】
someone who‘s seen more than her fair share of bad beef：意即作为一个见了过多臭牛排的厨师来说。这个不是固定俗语，而是Paula作为一个厨师身份，她用bad beef这个行话来做比喻，指那些不怎么样的男人。
look out after someone：把关。我们知道，look out的意思是向外看；留神；提防；照料；搜索；找出。after someone，字面理解是在某人后面。连起来，在某人后面(帮他)留神，那就是“帮某人把关”的意思了 :))
Paula: Well, you do realise the odds of that happening are a little slimmer if they never get to meet the guy..
如果他们没见过他机会就更渺茫 odds：几率，机会，可能性 胜算 slim：稀少的; (希望, 可能性)微小的, 渺茫的
Joey: You can come in, but your filter-tipped little buddy has to stay outside! 有过滤嘴的
(Chandler sulkilty picks up a garbage can lid and uses it as an umbrella.)
sulkily：这里应该是笔误吧，查不到那个词。ad. 乖戾地, 悻悻然, 闷闷不乐地，不高兴地
lid：vt. 给...盖盖子
Phoebe: 'Dear Ms. Buffay. Thank you for calling attention to our error. We have credited your account with five hundred dollars. We're sorry for the inconvenience, and hope you'll accept this- (Searches in her purse) -football phone as our free gift.' Do you believe this?! Monica: (to Alan) Thanks. I‘ll call you tomorrow. (Alan exits, to all) Okay，Okay, let‘s let the Alan-bashing begin. Who‘s gonna take the first shot, hmm?

bash：n.重击；狂欢。v.重击；撞毁
这里Alan-bashing是指“对Alan的批判”
Who‘s gonna take the first shot？翻译：谁先批判？
Joey: Know what was great? The way his smile was kinda crooked.
翻译：知道他什么最棒吗？就是他微笑的时候有点邪邪的样子
crooked：歪的，弯曲的；不正当的；欺诈的，不正派的
Phoebe: From the nursery rhyme. 'There was a crooked man, Who had a crooked smile, Who lived in a shoe, For a... while...' 儿歌，童谣
(Dubious pause.)
Ross: ...So I think Alan will become the yardstick against which all future boyfriends will be measured.
翻译：我认为Alan可以成为以后男朋友的丈量标准。
yardstick：标准；准绳，后面跟介词of或against,
比如：Is diploma the only yardstick of knowledge?
这里有一个相关短语：

这里有一些生词(at least they are new words to me)：
saltine：撒盐饼干
tin-foil hat：锡箔帽
pretzel：一种脆饼干。
[Scene: Chandler's office, Chandler looks around, opens his desk drawer, takes a puff of a cigarette, sprays around some air freshener, and takes some breath spray. He types for a little while, opens the drawer again, and takes another drag of the cigarette. Chandler: So I have a flaw! Big deal! Like Joey's constant knuckle-cracking isn't annoying? And Ross, with his over-pronouncing every single word? And Monica, with that snort when she laughs? cut it out：停止做某事，[口]住口。
【解析】
众人阻止Chandler抽烟，引起了他的不满，于是开始挑其他人毛病(flaw)。比如Joey经常扳指关节(knuckle-cracking. knuckle，关节；crack，噼啪声)，Ross则把每个音发得太清楚(over-pronouncing)，Monica大笑时会有鼻音(snort)。
big deal：了不起。其相反意思not a big deal或者no big deal都表示“没什么大不了”。
Joey: ...Does the knuckle-cracking bother everybody?
Rachel: Well, I-I could live without it. 我觉得有点点烦
Joey: Well, is it, like, a little annoying, or is it like when Phoebe chews her hair?
(Phoebe spits out her hair.)
Ross: Oh, now, don't listen to him, Pheebs, I think it's endearing. 可爱的
Joey: Oh, (Imitating Ross) "you do, do you"?
(Monica laughs and snorts.)
Ross: You know, there's nothing wrong with speaking correctly.
Rachel: "Indeed there isn't"... I should really get back to work.
Phoebe: Yeah, 'cause otherwise someone might get what they actually ordered.
Rachel: Ohh-ho-hooohhh. The hair comes out, and the gloves come on.
(They degenerate into bickering and Chandler happily starts to smoke, undisturbed.) 聪明的chandler,实在不能不喜欢他。
degenerate into bickering：（最后）沦为一阵口水大战。
degenerate：堕落为；蜕化为
bickering：争吵
undisturbed：a. 未被扰乱的, 安静的, 镇定的
【解析】
翻译：全都发泄出来了。
gloves come on是从一句俗语来的,其实就相当于hurt somebody。我估计是从拳击那边引过来的，as in boxing gloves。有时候你还会听到类似的说法：“not lay a glove (fingure or hand) on”， which means leave unhurt.
【场景】Monica和Paula在工作。
Monica: Did you ever go out with a guy your friends all really like?
Paula: No.
Monica: Okay.. Well, I‘m going out with a guy my friends all really like.
Paula: Waitwait.. we talking about the coyotes here? All right, a cow got through!
这里翻译为，我们在谈郊狼吗?一头牛居然全身而退
[Scene: Cental Perk, Joey and Ross are persecuting Chandler about his smoking.]
Joey: Do you have any respect for your body?
Ross: Don't you realise what you're-you're doing to yourself?
Chandler: Hey, y'know, I have had it with you guys and your cancer and your emphysema and your heart disease. The bottom line is, smoking is cool, and you know it. 肺气肿 至少
Rachel: (to Ross, who has wandered up) God, he's good. 徘徊，漫步

Ross: Hey Pheebs, you gonna have the rest of that Pop-Tart?.. Pheebs?
Pop-Tart：听起来蛮像“泡泡糖”。呵呵，是“上面有果酱或果陷的小圆饼”。tart是“小烘饼，小馅饼”的意思。
Phoebe: Wait, wait, I‘m getting a deja vu...no, I‘m not.
deja vu：n.似曾相识的感觉；幻觉记忆。这是一句法语，可能说多了英语，突然来一句法语，会显得时尚一些吧，类似的还有ciao，也是法语，表示“再见”的意思。就像我们说多了中文的“再见”，用bye来替换一下
Monica: Okay. It's-it's about Alan. There's something that you should know. I mean, there's really no easy way to say this.. uh.. I've decided to break up with Alan. 这事真的很难启齿
【场景】Monica and Rachel‘s, everyone is mopping around and eating ice cream.
Ross: Yeah. He could row like a viking.
row：划船
viking：n.海盗，北欧海盗。
mop：vi. 做鬼脸
补充（转载）：

all over him 这里all over him的意思是，不喜欢，全身挑毛病。相反的意思是I am under you。表示“我很在乎你”
这种词一定要看上下文，在they all find out 那集，chan对mon说 pheo is all over him ,这里就有引诱，往身上贴的意思，委婉的说是喜欢，：）
all over sb. 意思是非常喜欢...，着迷，因为喜欢得不得了，所以恨不得扑上去贴着
I‘m all over you.我對你非常地著迷. 而I'm so over you.我真是受够你了，却表示的是相反的意思。
All over you 就是說對你非常地著迷, 這還有另一種表示方法, 叫 I have a crush on you. 這二句都是表達很喜歡某人的意思.
I‘m over you.我跟你之間完了. I'm so over you.我真是受够你了。
一字之差但是意思完全不同喔. 你要是說 I‘m over you, 就是說我跟你之間完了, 我不想再和你有任何的瓜葛. 這和 I‘m all over you 是完全不一樣的.
